Inspection of racks is mandatory per the Working Conditions Act

The requirement to have warehouse racks inspected stems from the Working Conditions Act. This law requires employers to provide safe work equipment to all employees.

Therefore all racks in use in the warehouse must be safe. For example, all storage systems must have a sound construction and must meet the requirements included in the Working Conditions Act.

With this duty of inspection, your employees are assured that rack maintenance is carried out on time. By complying, you, as an employer show that you do everything to prevent accidents and create a safe situation in the warehouse.

Inspection scaffolding required?

With the Working Conditions Act as a basis, three instants have been established when an inspection is mandatory, during which a certified inspector must check the storage systems. Those three fixed instances are as follows:

  • After inspection, relocation, or conversion of the warehouse racks
  • After repairing (severe) damage
  • Fixed annual instances to discover maintenance or defects in time.

The annual inspection applies to metal storage systems that are mechanically loaded. In the warehouse, these are the following racks:

  • Pallet racks
  • Cantilever racks
  • Drive-in racks
  • Mezzanine floor

When you use these racks in your warehouse, they must be inspected annually to ensure safe use. If you have any questions about the inspection of your warehouse racks, you can always contact us.
